National Mathematics Day was celebrated on 14th February, 2019 by the Department of Mathematics of Akal university, Talwandi Sabo as an event MATHON’ 19. National Mathematics Day is celebrated every year all over India on the birth anniversary (22nd December) of great Indian mathematician Sir Srinivasan Ramanujan. This program was supported by NCSTC, DST, GOI & PSCST. The purpose of this event is to inculcate the ideas of mathematics among the students.
This event includes Special Lecture by eminent speaker Dr. Amit Kulshrestha, HOD, Department of Mathematics, IISER, Mohali, Model Display and Mathematics Quiz Competition. Total 182 students participated from 14 different colleges/universities.44 teams (comprising of 3 members) in quiz competition, out of which 6 teams were shortlisted for the final participation in the event. There were 25 teams for Model display competition.
In the first session. Dr. Sukhpreet Kaur, Assistant Professor welcomed the worthy Chief guest of the day Dr. Amit Kulshrestha, HOD, Department of Mathematics, IISER, Mohali, Prof. (Dr.) Gurmail Singh (Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Akal University, Talwandi Sabo), Prof. M.S. Johal (Dean Academics, Akal University) and all the participants from various colleges/universities. There after Ms. Husandeep Kaur, student of B. Sc. (2nd year) delivered a speech on the topic “Why we celebrate National Mathematics Day”. Then Dr. Sukhpreet Kaur introduced Dr. Amit Kulshrestha to the audience and invited him to deliver a special lecture on the topic “Pizza, Pi and Ramanujan”. Dr. Amit Kulshrestha presented eloquent talk on the topic “Pizza, Pi and Ramanujan” in a very effective and interesting way. The audience was greatly encouraged and gained a lot by this lecture.
In the second session the Model Display competition was held. The students from various colleges presented their models on various topics related to the applications of mathematics in our daily life. Each team comprised of two members. Among the 25 teams of model display competition, the best three teams who presented their models fulfilling each and every aspect were selected as winners by the collective evaluation done by Dr. Amit Kulshrestha, Mr. M.L Garg and Mr. Sumit Kumar accompanying the eminent speaker.
