National Science Day-2019

National Science Day is celebrated all over India with great enthusiasm on February 28 every year to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect by the Indian physicist, Dr. Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (C V Raman) on the same day in the year 1928. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930 for this discovery. This event is celebrated as one of the prominent science festivals in India every year, during which students of various schools and colleges demonstrate motley of science projects as well as national and state science institutions exhibit their latest researches.

Similarly, on February 28, 2019 National Science Day was celebrated by Akal University, Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda in collaboration with NCSTC, DST, GOI & PSCST. The purpose of this event was to motivate students for science so that they could contribute towards major scientific developments being made in India

In this event, a special lecture was given by Prof. M.S. Johal, Dean Academic Affairs, Akal University, Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda. After this special lecture lecture various events such as scientific model display, poster Presentations, Oral Presentations and quiz competition were organized. Total 264 students participated from 07 different colleges/universities. Total 42 teams (each comprising of 3 members) in quiz competition, out of which 6 teams were shortlisted for the final participation in the event. There were 22 teams (each comprising of 1 or 2 members) for Model display competition, 65 teams (comprising of 1 or 2 members) for poster presentation and 29 for oral presentations.

In the first session. Dr. Ramandeep Kaur, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics and Dr. Sukhpreet Kaur, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics  welcomed the Prof. (Dr.) Gurmail Singh (Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Akal University, Talwandi Sabo), Prof. M.S. Johal (Dean Academics, Akal University), faculty members of various participating colleges, Faculty of Akal University and all the internal and external participants. Dr. Ramandeep Kaur highlighted the importance of National Science Day and also about the Raman Effect. Then Dr. Kaur introduced Prof. M.S. Johal to the audience and invited him to deliver a special lecture on the topic “Science”. 

Prof. M.S. Johal, Dean Academic Affairs, Akal University delivered a talk based on Science and its applications. The audience was greatly encouraged and gained detailed knowledge about various scientific achievements. Additionally, the participants were also motivated to opt science as their career through this lecture.

In the second session, various events like Scientific Model Display, Poster Presentations, Quiz and oral presentations were organized. The students from various colleges presented their Science based models on various topics related to Science and its applications. Among the 22 teams of model display competition, the best three teams who presented their models fulfilling each and every aspect were selected as winners by the collective evaluation done by Judgment Committee

In the evening session, one special lecture based on CV Raman and his research findings, was delivered by Prof. S.S. Bhatti, Former Professor & Head, Department of Applied Physics, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. After this evening lecture, valedictory session was conducted. In this session all the participants, escort teachers from various colleges, whole faculty and all the science students of Akal University  were present. All the participants were presented participation certificates and the winners were given prizes by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Akal University, Talwandi Sabo,  Prof. M.S. Johal, Dean Academic Affairs, Akal University, Talwandi Sabo and Prof. S.S. Bhatti. Prof. M.S. Johal, Dean Academic and Coordinator of NSD-2019, concluded this event by extending vote of thanks to all the participants, escort teachers, student volunteers, coordinators and members of various committees constituted for National Science Day-2019 celebrations.
